From The Piney Woods School Workshop Series

Learn how to inspect, protect, and produce healthy livestock within a conservation environment.

Featuring Special Guest:

Dr. Rachel Cezar-Martinez and her USDA APHIS Veterinary Services Mississippi Team

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Topics will include:

  • introduction: best biosecurity practices for managing your livestock
  • how to spot signs of illness and take action
  • strategies for protecting the herd as a whole
  • tagging and tracking your animals
  • services the USDA APHIS Veterinary Services can provide to you!
  • managing soil and water quality with livestock
  • bringing it all together: NRCS EQIP practices that support livestock production

Arrive at 9am to sign in and meet with other farmers. Workshop begins promptly at 9:30. Lunch will be served!

    This workshop has been funded through a grant to The Piney Woods School through the Natural Resource Conservation Service within USDA.
  2. Do I have to pay for lunch?
    No. Lunch is provided courtesy of The Piney Woods cafeteria.
  3. I’m a beginning farmer. Is it okay if I attend?
    The workshops are designed for farmers at all levels of experience.
  4. Will someone be there to help my farm if I need additional assistance?
    Yes! Staff from USDA and Up in Farms are available to provide you free farm visitations and technical assistance.

Ricky Johnson from Alcorn State Extension will be joined by an expert from USDA to demonstrate animal maintenance on goats and sheep.

Soil and Conservation Science Director, Up in Farms
Mr. Johnson joined Up in Farms after a prestigious 30+ year career at USDA NRCS, including a 12-year term as the State Soil Scientist for Mississippi. Mr. Johnson's experience in both soil science and conservation make him an indispensable fount of knowledge for technical support and training for our farming community.

Dr. Cezar-Martinez is an experienced veterinary professional leader and all-around public servant with a demonstrated productive history in government administration, military service, and equine and animal science teaching. She is passionate to inspire and develop younger generations--especially those who are socially-disadvantage and under-represented--into veterinary medicine, animal science, agriculture, livestock farming and the equine industry. She also aims to assist veterinary professionals interested in career transitioning from traditional practice to the government or military. Dr. Cezar-Martinez is also proud to serve as President of the National Association of Federal Veterinarians.
